Špilberk Fortress (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Špilberk Fortress overlooks the city of Brno from a hilltop and has a history spanning over 700 years. It was founded in the second half of the 13th century by King Ottokar II Přemysl as a royal residence and a seat for the Moravian Margraves. From the 17th century onwards, the facility was progressively converted into a massive Baroque fortress, playing a central role in defense against Swedish and later Napoleonic forces. However, Špilberk gained notoriety as the harshest prison in the Habsburg Monarchy, known in the 18th and 19th centuries as the 'Prison of Nations.' Political prisoners, revolutionaries, and resistance fighters from across Europe were incarcerated in its infamous casemates. During World War II, Nazi occupiers utilized the fortress once again as a prison for Czech patriots. Today, the complex houses the Brno City Museum and serves as a cultural hub, documenting the region's diverse military and political history.
