Prostějov is located in the heart of the fertile Haná region in Moravia and has a long history as a center for the textile industry. The city was first mentioned in the 12th century and grew rapidly into a significant market town thanks to its location along major trade routes. The city skyline is dominated by the New Town Hall, featuring a 66-meter-high tower that has panoramic views over the Moravian lowlands. An architectural gem of the city is the National House (Národní dům), a masterpiece of Czech Art Nouveau designed by the renowned architect Jan Kotěra. During the 20th century, Prostějov was home to the country's largest clothing factory, earning it the nickname "the Czech Manchester". The city is also the birthplace of the famous poet Jiří Wolker, whose legacy is commemorated by several monuments and his birth house. Today, Prostějov is not only an industrial hub but also a prominent city for sports, particularly famous for its professional tennis and volleyball clubs.
