Villa Tugendhat (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Villa Tugendhat in Brno, designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is considered one of the most significant works of modern architecture in the world. Built between 1928 and 1930 for Jewish industrialists Grete and Fritz Tugendhat, it embodies the principles of Functionalism and the International Style. The building features a pioneering steel frame construction that allowed for free-flowing interior spaces without the need for load-bearing walls. It is famous for its use of luxurious materials, such as a rare onyx wall from the Atlas Mountains and exotic tropical woods. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows can be electronically lowered into the floor, seamlessly merging the living area with the garden. Despite its tragic history during the Nazi occupation and the communist era, the villa was meticulously restored and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001.
