Pernštejn Castle, often referred to as the Marble Castle, is situated in the South Moravian Region and stands as one of the most significant late Gothic fortresses in Central Europe. It was founded in the mid-13th century by the Lords of Pernstein and served as the ancestral seat of this influential noble family for centuries. The architecture of the complex is notable for its defensive position on a rocky promontory and the use of local white marble for portals and window frames. During the Thirty Years' War, the fortress successfully resisted a siege by Swedish troops in 1645, solidifying its reputation as an impregnable stronghold. In the 16th century, the castle underwent Renaissance expansions, though its core Gothic character remained largely preserved. The interior houses valuable collections of furniture, weaponry, and artworks documenting the lifestyle of the Moravian nobility. Today, Pernštejn is a state cultural monument and a key example of the development of European fortification art from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
