Valašské Meziříčí, often referred to as the 'Athens of Wallachia', is located at the confluence of the Vsetínská and Rožnovská Bečva rivers. The modern town was established in 1924 through the merger of the town of Meziříčí and the municipality of Krásno nad Bečvou. Its history dates back to the 13th century, with Meziříčí first mentioned in 1297. For centuries, the town served as a vital administrative and educational hub for the region, earning its cultural nickname. Major landmarks include the Žerotín Castle, a Renaissance building with Baroque modifications, and the Kinský Castle in the Krásno district. The town is home to a unique tapestry manufactory, founded in 1898, which remains the only one of its kind in Moravia. In addition to its textile heritage, the town is a center for the chemical industry today and features a well-known astronomical observatory, opened in 1955, which serves as a significant research facility.
