Paphos, located on the southwestern coast of Cyprus, is a site of immense archaeological significance and is listed in its entirety as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Deeply intertwined with Greek mythology, it is famed as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, whose cult was centered here for centuries. The city's primary highlights include the exquisite Roman mosaics in the Archaeological Park, dating from the 2nd to the 5th centuries AD, which are among the finest and best-preserved in the Mediterranean. Another major landmark is the Tombs of the Kings, a sprawling underground necropolis from the 4th century BC, characterized by impressive Doric columns and rock-cut chambers. The appealing harbor is overlooked by the Paphos Medieval Castle, which has seen various reconstructions by Byzantines, Lusignans, and Ottomans. Nearby, the famous 'Petra tou Romiou' rock marks the spot where legend says Aphrodite rose from the sea foam. Paphos was honored as the European Capital of Culture in 2017, leading to significant urban revitalization and new cultural initiatives. Today, it remains a premier destination blending ancient wonders with modern luxury resorts, bustling nightlife, and world-class golf courses.
