Agios Neophytos Monastery (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Agios Neophytos Monastery, located about 10 kilometers north of Paphos, is one of the holiest and historically most valuable monasteries in Cyprus. It was founded in 1159 by Saint Neophytos, who retired as a hermit into the secluded caves of the region. The most significant part of the ensemble is the 'Enkleistra,' a cave hermitage carved directly into the rock, housing the saint's cell, a small chapel, and his tomb. These rock chambers are adorned with extraordinary wall paintings from the 12th to 15th centuries, which are among the finest examples of Byzantine art worldwide. Particularly famous are the works by the painter Theodore Apseudes from 1183. In the 15th century, the monastery was expanded with a large main church in the Venetian style, which now forms the center of the complex. An attached museum preserves valuable manuscripts, icons, and ecclesiastical vestments. Its peaceful location in a lush valley with sea views makes the monastery a place of tranquility and spiritual reflection for visitors from around the world.
