Avakas Gorge (Cyprus)

Weather…

Avakas Gorge is a striking natural monument located on the western edge of the Akamas Peninsula near Paphos. The gorge was carved over thousands of years by the erosive force of a small stream cutting through soft limestone rock. It stretches for about three kilometres, with walls rising vertically up to 30 metres in certain sections. The narrowest point of the passage measures only a few metres wide, providing an intense geological experience. Botanically, the gorge is a haven for rare species like Centaurea akamantis, an endemic plant found exclusively in this area. The path through the gorge is often slippery and can be life-threatening during rain due to the high risk of flash floods. The rock formations clearly display sedimentary layering and illustrate the dynamic evolution of the Cypriot landscape.
