Polis Chrysochous, often simply called Polis, is located in northwestern Cyprus on the shores of Chrysochous Bay. Unlike the busy tourist centers in the south, Polis has retained the charm of a traditional rural town. The town center consists of a pedestrian area with restored stone houses, small cafes, and taverns clustered around the central Platia (square). The town stands on the ruins of the ancient city-kingdom of Marion, whose history is documented in the local Marion-Arsinoe Museum. The surrounding area is characterized by fertile plains and tobacco plantations reaching the edge of the Akamas nature reserve. The beaches of Polis are extensive and mostly consist of a mixture of sand and pebbles. Quiet sections can still be found here even in midsummer. A special highlight is the campsite by the sea, located in a shaded eucalyptus forest. For active holidaymakers, Polis provides numerous cycling and hiking trails leading into the untouched nature of the hinterland. The town serves as a supply center for the surrounding villages and has all necessary facilities such as supermarkets and banks. The best time to visit is spring, when the region is in full bloom, or September, when the sea is still warm but the heat is less oppressive.
