💡 Tips

  • Rent a 4x4 or join a jeep safari; regular rental cars are often not insured for the unpaved roads here.
  • Bring plenty of drinking water and sun protection, as facilities are extremely limited inside the reserve.
  • The Baths of Aphrodite area gets busy; hike the Adonis or Aphrodite trails early in the morning to beat the heat and crowds.
  • Look out for nesting sea turtles at Lara Bay during summer months, but keep your distance and never disturb the nests.

The Akamas Peninsula is the last large wilderness area of Cyprus, stretching over 230 square kilometers on the northwestern coast. The area is largely undeveloped as there are no paved roads in its interior. It is home to over 530 plant species, including rare orchids and the endemic Akamas centaury found nowhere else. The landscape's diversity ranges from deep gorges like Avakas Gorge to gentle hills and rocky coastal sections. One of the most famous highlights is the Blue Lagoon, where the water is so clear and turquoise it looks almost surreal. On the western side lies Lara Bay, an important nesting site for endangered green and loggerhead turtles. Here, volunteers monitor nests and protect the hatchlings. According to legend, the peninsula was the playground of the goddess Aphrodite, evidenced by the 'Baths of Aphrodite' at the eastern entrance. Exploring the peninsula requires a 4x4 vehicle, a quad, or utilizing the well-marked hiking trails. Since there are no restaurants or shops within the park, visitors must bring sufficient water and supplies. The best time to visit is spring (March to May), when the entire peninsula shines in a sea of flowers and temperatures are convenient for hiking.
