Medvedgrad (Croatia)

Weather…

Medvedgrad is a formidable medieval fortress perched on the southern slopes of Mount Medvednica, overlooking the city of Zagreb. It was built in 1250 by Bishop Philip of Zagreb following the catastrophic Mongol invasion, with the primary aim of protecting the city's inhabitants and the church's treasures. Throughout its history, the fortress was a center of political power and shifted hands among prominent noble families, including the Counts of Celje and the Zrinskis. In 1590, a powerful earthquake severely damaged the structures, leading to its eventual abandonment and centuries of decay. During the 1990s, the fortress underwent significant restoration work and now houses the 'Altar of the Homeland' (Oltar domovine), a national memorial dedicated to Croatian soldiers who fell in various wars. Visitors can explore the well-preserved 13th-century early Gothic Chapel of Saints Philip and James, known for its refined architectural details. The fortress remains one of the best vantage points for panoramic views of the Croatian capital and the surrounding Sava river valley. Today, it serves as a vital cultural site, hosting festivals and historical reenactments during the summer months.
