St. Mark's Church (Croatia)

Weather…

St. Mark's Church is one of the oldest and most recognizable buildings in Zagreb, located in the heart of St. Mark's Square in the Upper Town (Gradec). Originally built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style, it underwent significant Gothic alterations in the 14th century. The church is internationally famous for its colorful tiled roof, installed in 1880 during a renovation by architects Friedrich von Schmidt and Hermann Bollé. The tiles depict the coat of arms of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia on the left, and the coat of arms of Zagreb on the right. Another architectural marvel is the 14th-century Gothic south portal, featuring 15 statues of saints and apostles, considered one of the finest examples of Gothic sculpture in the region. The interior houses notable sculptures by Ivan Meštrović and lively frescoes by Jozo Kljaković. Surrounded by the Croatian Parliament and the Government Seat, the church stands as a symbol of Croatian statehood and history, serving as the site for presidential inaugurations and other state ceremonies.
