Danilo is located in the fertile hinterland of Šibenik and is one of Croatia's most significant archaeological landmarks. The village gave its name to the Neolithic 'Danilo culture' (c. 4500-3900 BC), famous for its elaborately decorated pottery and ritual vessels. Systematic excavations have revealed a complex history of habitation, spanning from the Stone Age through to the Middle Ages. During Roman times, the site was known as Municipium Riditarum, an important regional center. Today, visitors can still spot Roman architectural fragments and inscriptions integrated into the local landscape. The Church of St. Daniel, perched on a hill overlooking the village, was built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica. The surrounding Danilo field is a green expanse dominated by vineyards and traditional agriculture. For those interested in history and archaeology, Danilo is a fascinating open-air museum.
