Crna Mlaka Ornithological Reserve (Croatia)

Weather…

The Crna Mlaka Ornithological Reserve is located in the Jastrebarsko plain, southwest of Zagreb, and stands as one of Croatia's most vital bird conservation areas. The reserve consists of an extensive network of fishponds and surrounding oak forests, covering an area of approximately 6.2 square kilometers. Created in the early 20th century for pisciculture, these water bodies quickly evolved into a crucial habitat for various water birds. Crna Mlaka is particularly noted as a nesting ground for the rare white-tailed eagle and black stork, as well as a rest stop for thousands of migratory birds during their spring and autumn journeys. Designated as a special reserve in 1980, it was added to the international Ramsar list in 1993. The site also features the historical Zwilling Castle, built in the early 1900s in a late-historical style.
