Church of St. Euphemia Rovinj (Croatia)

Weather…

The Church of St. Euphemia is the dominant structure of Rovinj's Old Town, standing at the highest point of the peninsula. This Baroque three-naved church was constructed between 1725 and 1736 on the foundations of older sacred buildings. Its most distinctive feature is the 60-meter-high bell tower, modeled after St. Mark's Campanile in Venice, which carries the largest bronze statue in Istria at its peak. This statue of St. Euphemia rotates with the wind and has served as a weather indicator for the locals for centuries. Inside the church lies the precious sarcophagus of the saint, whose relics, according to legend, miraculously washed ashore in Rovinj in 800 AD. The interior is richly adorned with marble altars and paintings depicting the life of the martyr. The church is not only a spiritual center but also an architectural symbol of the close historical ties between Rovinj and Venice.
