Church of St. Euphemia (Croatia)

Weather…

The Church of St. Euphemia is the most prominent landmark in Rovinj, dominating the silhouette of this coastal Istrian town. The current Baroque edifice was constructed between 1725 and 1736 on the site of an earlier Christian church. The church is especially famous for its 60-meter-high bell tower, which was modeled after St. Mark's Campanile in Venice. Atop the tower sits a copper statue of St. Euphemia, which rotates with the wind and serves as a weather vane. Inside the church, a magnificent 6th-century marble sarcophagus houses the relics of the saint. According to local legend, this sarcophagus miraculously washed ashore in Rovinj in the year 800. The church is not only a vital spiritual center but also a site of great art-historical significance, preserving numerous valuable paintings and sculptures from various eras. Climbing the tower provides visitors with an unparalleled panoramic view over the Rovinj archipelago and the surrounding Adriatic Sea.
