Đakovo Cathedral (Croatia)

Weather…

The Đakovo Cathedral, officially the Basilica of St. Peter, is widely regarded as one of Croatia's most significant religious structures and a landmark of the Slavonia region. It was built between 1866 and 1882 under the patronage of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, a prominent figure in Croatian history and culture. Architects Karl Rösner and Friedrich von Schmidt designed the cathedral in the Neo-Romanesque style, characterized by its massive red brick facade and two 84-meter-high bell towers. The interior is lavishly decorated with frescoes by Alexander Maximilian and Lodovico Seitz, portraying intricate biblical narratives. The cathedral houses seven ornate altars and a grand organ known for its exceptional sound. Pope John XXIII once called it 'the most beautiful church between Constantinople and Rome.' Below the main floor lies a crypt containing the tomb of Bishop Strossmayer. The building stands as a testament to the artistic and spiritual ambitions of the 19th-century Croatian national revival.
