Ston is an architectural and engineering marvel at the entrance to the Pelješac peninsula. The fortification system built in the 14th century by the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) was intended to protect the valuable salt pans that produced 'white gold' for the state. With a total length of 5.5 kilometers, the Wall of Ston is considered the longest defensive system in Europe and is often referred to as the 'European Great Wall of China'. It connects Ston with the smaller Mali Ston, famous for its world-class oyster farming. The town itself was built according to a strict geometric plan, which was exceptional for medieval times. Besides the walls and salt pans, Ston is home to the Church of St. Michael, which preserves valuable 11th-century frescoes. Today, Ston attracts visitors who want to hike the impressive history and enjoy the freshest seafood in the Adriatic.
