Mali Ston is an architectural gem located at the entrance to the Pelješac peninsula, founded in 1334 by the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). The village was conceived as a strategic fortress town to guard the nearby salt pans of Ston, which were the Republic's greatest source of wealth. Its most defining feature is the monumental fortification system: a 5.5-kilometer-long stone wall, often called the 'European Great Wall of China,' which scales the mountain ridge to connect Mali Ston with its larger twin, Ston. The fortified rectangular harbor is an engineering marvel of its time, designed to defend the coast from naval invasions. Today, Mali Ston is synonymous with world-class gastronomy. The unique mixing of fresh water from underground springs and salty seawater in the Mali Ston Bay creates the well-suited environment for farming European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) and mussels. Tasting these fresh delicacies at a local tavern, paired with renowned local wines, is a highlight for any visitor. The village gives a serene atmosphere where massive medieval history meets authentic Dalmatian flavors.
