Cavtat, the ancient Epidaurum, is a place of timeless elegance at the southernmost tip of Croatia. After the original settlement was destroyed in the 7th century, the refugees founded nearby Dubrovnik, while Cavtat later flourished again under the rule of the Republic of Ragusa. The town stretches picturesquely along two peninsulas and features one of the most beautiful seaside promenades in the Adriatic, lined with palm trees and historic buildings. A cultural must-see is the house of Vlaho Bukovac, one of the most significant Croatian painters, which is now a museum. Perched high above the town is the Račić family mausoleum, a masterpiece by sculptor Ivan Meštrović, built entirely of white Brač marble without any metal joints. The Rector's Palace houses the impressive collection of the scholar Baltazar Bogišić. Cavtat combines the aristocratic spirit of the past with a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere and is a retreat for connoisseurs away from the crowds of Dubrovnik.
