Elafiti Islands (Croatia)

Weather…

The Elaphiti Islands are an archipelago northwest of Dubrovnik, consisting of thirteen islands, of which only the three largest, Šipan, Lopud, and Koločep, are permanently inhabited. The name is derived from the Greek word 'elaphos' for deer, hinting at the islands' once-abundant wildlife. Historically, the islands served as summer residences for the Dubrovnik aristocracy, evidenced today by numerous magnificent Renaissance and Baroque villas and chapels. Šipan is the largest island and is known for its olive and wine cultivation, while Lopud is famous for its sandy beaches such as Sunj beach. Koločep, the island closest to the mainland, is completely car-free and charms visitors with its dense pine forests and hidden caves. The archipelago's flora is typically Mediterranean, with cypresses, citrus fruits, and carob trees. The entire archipelago is under protection to preserve the delicate marine ecosystem and cultural heritage. Today, the Elaphiti are a key destination for day-trippers from Dubrovnik and yacht travelers.
