The town of Lastovo, the main settlement on the island of the same name, is a unique jewel of the Adriatic. Unlike most island towns, it is not located directly by the sea but in a natural, inward-facing amphitheater, which provided protection from pirate attacks in the past. This secluded location has contributed to the preservation of an exceptionally authentic atmosphere. The townscape is characterized by 15th and 16th-century stone houses with a special architectural feature: the 'fumari', ornate, cylindrical chimneys that were considered a status symbol of their owners. Each fumar is unique. A walk through the steep streets leads to the parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, whose treasury holds valuable liturgical items. Above the town sits a fortress built by the French in the early 19th century, which today has panoramic views of the town and the surrounding landscape. Lastovo is famous for its carnival, the 'Poklad', a centuries-old tradition commemorating a victory over pirates. The entire archipelago is a nature park, handy for hikers and nature lovers.
