Grižane-Belgrad is located in the pretty Vinodol Valley, protected by steep cliffs and overlooking the sea. In the Middle Ages, the settlement was one of the most important centers of the Frankopan princes. The ruins of the old Grižane castle sit atop a rock above the village, witnessing the strategic importance this place once held. From here, the valley was controlled and defended. The village is also known as the birthplace of the famous miniature painter Juraj Julije Klović, often referred to as the 'Michelangelo of the Miniature.' A memorial site in the village honors his legacy. The architecture of Grižane is typical for the coastal hinterland region, with robust stone houses and narrow alleys. The surrounding nature features fantastic opportunities for paragliding, rock climbing, and hiking. In Grižane's gastronomy, wine plays a central role, as the Vinodol Valley (Valley of Wine) has a millennia-old winemaking tradition. Especially the Žlahtina variety is prevalent here. Visitors can enjoy local wines and culinary delights such as Vinodol pasta and homemade pastries. The proximity to the seaside resort of Crikvenica (just a 10-minute drive) makes Grižane a good place for those who want to combine history and nature with a beach holiday.
