Poste de l'Alima (Congo - Brazzaville)

Weather…

Poste de l'Alima, established in 1880 by the explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, was one of the earliest French outposts in the interior of what is now the Republic of the Congo. Strategically located on the banks of the Alima River, it served as a vital base for the further exploration and colonization of the Congo Basin. From this location, expeditions were coordinated to establish contact with the local Bateke and Mbochi communities. Historically, the post marks the beginning of permanent European presence in this waterway-rich region. The original station consisted of basic huts and storehouses, yet it quickly evolved into a logistical hub for river trade and troop movements. Today, the site commemorates the early phases of the encounter between Europe and Central Africa and remains an important landmark for the regional history of the Cuvette region.
