Sima is located on the western peninsula of Anjouan island and is a historically significant town with a strategic location. For centuries, Sima served as a lookout post for the Sultanate of Ndzuwani to spot approaching ships from the west at an early stage. The town's architecture is characterized by the use of local building materials and traditional methods adapted to the island's climatic conditions. The region around Sima is known for its steep coasts and terraced agricultural lands, where cassava, bananas, and spices are primarily grown. Due to its geographical isolation, Sima was for a long time less affected by colonial influence than the port cities in the north, which contributed to the preservation of traditional customs. In recent years, transportation links have been improved, facilitating trade with the capital, Mutsamudu. Sima is also known for its religious scholarship and houses several historical tombs of great spiritual importance to the local population. The town's surroundings offer pristine natural areas with potential for future sustainable tourism.
