Medina of Mutsamudu (Comoros)

Weather…

The Medina of Mutsamudu on the island of Anjouan is one of the best-preserved historic old towns in the western Indian Ocean. Founded in the 15th century, it is characterized by a labyrinth of extremely narrow alleys, often barely a meter wide, which provide a natural cooling system against the tropical heat. The heart of the medina is the Citadel, constructed in 1782 to protect against Malagasy pirate raids. The house architecture is deeply rooted in Swahili traditions, featuring magnificently carved wooden doors and coral-stone walls. For centuries, the medina was a bustling commercial hub where spices, textiles, and gold were traded. Its strategic hillside location gives spectacular views of the harbor and the sea. Within its winding quarters, numerous small mosques and historic wells can be found, attesting to the highly developed urban culture of the past. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, it stands as a national symbol of pride and resilience for the Comorian people.
