Pomoni is a historically significant site on the south coast of Anjouan that played a central role in the Comorian economy during the 19th century. The town was the location of a large sugar plantation and factory founded by the Briton William Sunley in the 1850s. This industrial development brought modern technology and international trade relations to the region but also left complex social legacies. Today, ruins of the old factories and warehouses bear witness to that era. Pomoni is situated on a sheltered bay that previously served as an important port for the export of sugar and, later, vanilla. Today's economy is based on fishing and the cultivation of staple crops, while tourism is slowly discovering the historical remains. The surrounding area is characterized by dense tropical forests that reach down to the coast. Pomoni is also known for its peaceful atmosphere and the hospitality of its residents, who have preserved their traditions despite historical upheavals.
