Nuquí provides one of the most rugged and authentic ecotourism experiences in Colombia. Situated where the dense Chocó rainforest crashes into the dark, powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean, it is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The biggest draw for visitors is the annual migration of humpback whales, which come to these warm waters to breed and give birth. Aside from whales, visitors can surf world-class waves at Cabo Corrientes, relax in the natural thermal hot springs hidden in the jungle, or hike to spectacular secluded waterfalls. The food here is unique, blending Pacific flavors with exotic herbs, utilizing lots of fresh fish, plantains, and coconut milk. Because of its extreme isolation, Nuquí cannot be reached by road. Travelers must take a flight from Medellín or Quibdó, or a long cargo boat journey from Buenaventura. The peak season runs from July to October, specifically for the whale watching season, though the rain is constant year-round.
