Founded in 1540 by Jorge Robledo, it is one of the oldest settlements in the region and has served as a gateway to the Coffee Triangle. The city is world-famous for its 'Bordados' (hand embroidery), a traditional craft passed down through generations of local women. Cartago features a well-preserved colonial center, including the House of the Viceroys and numerous historic churches.
