Utría National Park (Colombia)

Weather…

Utría National Park is located on Colombia's Pacific coast in the Chocó Department and was established in 1987 to protect a unique convergence of ecosystems. Spanning about 54,300 hectares, the park features a rare combination of tropical rainforest, expansive mangroves, and bustling coral reefs. It is internationally renowned as a primary nursery for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), which migrate to the calm waters of the inlet between July and November to give birth and nurse their calves. In addition to whales, the park serves as a sanctuary for sea turtles, dolphins, and numerous coastal bird species. The dense inland jungles are home to pumas, howler monkeys, and a vast array of reptiles. The region experiences some of the highest rainfall levels on Earth, resulting in exceptionally lush vegetation. Utría is a cornerstone of regional eco-tourism, fostering sustainable practices in partnership with local Afro-Colombian communities. Visitors can traverse the mangrove swamps on elevated wooden walkways or take boat tours to witness the incredible marine biodiversity within the protected bays.
