Convent of Santo Ecce Homo (Colombia)

Weather…

The Convent of Santo Ecce Homo, located near Villa de Leyva in the department of Boyacá, was founded in 1620 by the Dominican Order. It is considered one of the most significant examples of colonial religious architecture in Colombia. The convent originally served as a center for the evangelization of the region's indigenous population and as a retreat for the monks. A unique feature is the use of local materials; the floors and walls contain numerous fossils from the Cretaceous period, which are abundant in the region's arid desert. The central courtyard is surrounded by a two-story cloister with high-quality wood carvings and stonework. The church houses valuable altarpieces and religious paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the convent functions partly as a museum, housing an impressive collection of religious art and historical documents.
