Pantano de Vargas Monument (Colombia)

Weather…

Pantano de Vargas, located near Paipa in the department of Boyacá, is one of Colombia's most significant historical sites. Here, on July 25, 1819, the Battle of Pantano de Vargas took place, a decisive turning point in the war of independence against the Spanish crown. Simón Bolívar and his troops faced a numerically superior royalist army until the heroic charge of 14 lancers led by Juan José Rondón brought victory. To commemorate this event, a monumental sculpture by Rodrigo Arenas Betancur was inaugurated in 1969. The area includes vast plains and hills that now serve as a memorial site and National Monument. It is a symbol of courage and the firm resolve for freedom. Visitors can explore the tactical positions of the armies and admire the scale of the bronze sculpture, which is considered one of the largest in South America.
