Monument to the Lancers (Colombia)

Weather…

The Monument to the Lancers is a spectacular artwork by Colombian sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancur, located at Pantano de Vargas near Paipa. It is the largest monument in Colombia and commemorates the decisive charge of the 14 lancers during the battle on July 25, 1819. The bronze sculpture depicts the horses and riders in a dynamic, almost flying upward motion, symbolizing the courage and onslaught of the troops led by Juan José Rondón against the Spanish royalists. Standing 33 meters high, it is a technical and artistic masterpiece resting on a massive concrete structure. The monument was inaugurated in 1969 for the 150th anniversary of Colombia's independence. It is considered one of the most important symbols of Colombian national pride and is a must-see for any visitor to the historical Boyacá region.
