Puente de Boyacá (Colombia)

Weather…

The Puente de Boyacá is a small bridge and a major historical landmark located in the central Andes of Colombia, approximately 110 kilometers northeast of Bogotá. It was the site of the Battle of Boyacá on August 7, 1819, a definitive engagement that secured the independence of New Granada from Spanish colonial rule. Led by Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander, the patriot forces achieved a strategic victory that opened the way to the capital and the subsequent creation of Gran Colombia. The current bridge is a faithful reconstruction of the original 19th-century structure, serving as the centerpiece of an extensive commemorative park. The site features several monumental works, including the Von Miller Monument dedicated to Bolívar, the Patriot Flame, and a massive Triumphal Arch. Situated at an elevation of 2,820 meters, the area remains a sacred ground for Colombian national identity. Every year, the anniversary of the battle is celebrated as a public holiday, marked by military parades and official state visits to the memorial complex.
