The Manda Forest is part of the Manda National Park in southern Chad, located near the city of Sarh along the banks of the Chari River. This protected area covers approximately 1,140 square kilometers and features a diverse mix of wooded savanna, gallery forests, and seasonally flooded grasslands. Originally established in 1953 to protect the Giant Eland and other large mammals, the park remains a critical conservation site. Despite challenges from poaching and environmental shifts, the forest still supports a variety of wildlife, including lions, giraffes, and a vast array of waterbirds along the river. The vegetation is characterized by tall grasses and typical savanna trees such as fan palms and various acacia species. The Chari River is integral to the forest's ecosystem, flooding large sections of the park during the rainy season and replenishing the soil and fish stocks. Manda Forest serves as a vital sanctuary for biodiversity in a region increasingly pressured by agricultural expansion and human settlement.
