Lake Iro is a circular lake located in the Moyen-Chari region of southeastern Chad, near the border with the Central African Republic. Measuring approximately 13 kilometers in diameter, the lake's excellent round shape has led many geologists to hypothesize that it originated from a meteorite impact crater, although this theory remains subject to ongoing scientific debate. The lake is seasonally connected to the Bahr Salamat river system during the peak of the rainy season, allowing for the exchange of water and fish species. During the dry months, the lake remains a permanent body of water, providing a crucial resource for the surrounding savannah ecosystem. The local population relies heavily on the lake for subsistence fishing, with large quantities of Tilapia and Nile Perch being harvested annually. The vegetation around the lake is dominated by tall grasses and acacia woodlands, which support a variety of wildlife including hippopotamuses and various waterfowl. Despite its ecological importance, Lake Iro remains one of the more remote and less studied aquatic environments in Central Africa.

Reaching this remote site typically involves long-distance off-road travel through southern Chad starting from a regional hub like Sarh. A robust 4x4 vehicle and a highly experienced local driver are practically mandatory to navigate the unmarked dirt tracks.

Travel is usually only feasible during the strictly dry months from November to March when the unpaved routes harden. Heavy summer rains often transform the surrounding Sahelian landscape into an impassable, muddy quagmire.

The immediate area is relatively flat, defined by savanna grasses and sparse shrubbery tracing the distinct circular shoreline. The ground can be very dusty during the dry season, making walks around the rim physically undemanding but exposed.

Extreme heat demands ample drinking water, a wide-brimmed hat, and high-quality sunglasses to shield against intense glare. Lightweight but fully covering clothing helps protect against both the harsh sun and occasional thorny vegetation.
