Moyen-Chari Cotton Plantations (Chad)

Weather…

Cotton plantations in the Moyen-Chari region are the heart of Chad's export economy. Often referred to as 'white gold,' cotton was introduced on a massive scale in the 1920s under French colonial rule and has since shaped the social and economic fabric of the region. Sarh, the provincial capital, grew into a significant industrial center through the processing and export of cotton fibers. Production is predominantly carried out by smallholder farmers who cultivate and harvest the crop through strenuous manual labor. Historically, cotton production was often linked to coercive measures, but it has evolved into a voluntary, albeit market-dependent, economic activity. The state-controlled cotton company (CotonTchad) manages procurement and logistics. Despite international price fluctuations and competition from synthetic fibers, cotton cultivation remains the primary source of foreign exchange for the state and the main source of income for the rural population in the south.
