Sarh, formerly known as Fort-Archambault, is the third-largest city in Chad and the administrative capital of the Moyen-Chari region. Established in 1899 and named after a French officer, it was renamed Sarh in 1972, reflecting the identity of the dominant Sara ethnic group. Located on the banks of the Chari River, the city historically served as the centerpiece of Chad's textile industry, particularly through the Société Textile du Tchad (STT). The region's tropical wet climate makes it a handy location for cotton and sugarcane cultivation, as well as productive river fishing. Sarh is noted for its rich cultural life and the Sarh National Museum, which preserves significant artifacts of local traditions and history. As a vital transport hub, it connects the fertile southern regions with the capital and neighboring territories. Its proximity to the Manda National Park highlights the city's importance in regional conservation and potential for eco-tourism development.
