The Nkout iron ore deposit is situated in the Dja-et-Lobo department of southern Cameroon and is considered one of the most promising mineral discoveries of recent years. It consists of a massive magnetite deposit stretching nearly 20 kilometers in length, which has been detailed through modern exploration techniques. The geological structure is part of the Ntem Complex, a stable craton known for its rich mineralization. Developing this deposit is closely linked to national infrastructure expansion, particularly the planned rail connection to the port of Kribi. Economically, Nkout gives the potential to diversify Cameroon's mining sector and reduce reliance on agricultural exports. However, as the project is located in a high-biodiversity region, strict environmental regulations must be met to ensure the protection of the surrounding rainforest. The government views Nkout as a strategic component of its Vision 2035 national plan to transform Cameroon into an emerging economy.

What is this place?
The Nkout Iron Ore Deposit in southeastern Cameroon is one of the most significant undeveloped iron ore deposits in the country. It is part of the wider resource potential of the Ntem region and could play a central role in Cameroon's mining sector in the future.

Visiting
The deposit area is located in a remote, dense forest region and is currently not developed for visitors. Access is only possible via unpaved tracks and requires a permit from the relevant mining authority.

Where to view it
Since the deposit is not yet developed, there are no official viewpoints. Some elevated spots along the forest roads in the area do, however, offer views over the wooded hills beneath which the ore bodies are suspected to lie.

Currently, no mining products are extracted in the region, but the local market provides agricultural products such as cocoa, coffee, and tropical fruits. Should the mine become operational, iron ore concentrates could become the most important local product.

As the project is still in the exploration phase, there is no active mining. If a mine is established, the dry season from November to February would be most suitable for construction and transport activities.
