The Dja Faunal Reserve in southeastern Cameroon is one of the largest and best-protected rainforest areas in Central Africa, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. The reserve covers an area of approximately 5,260 square kilometers and is almost entirely encircled by the natural course of the Dja River, which acts as a natural boundary. The dense vegetation consists primarily of pristine tropical primary forest, hosting an enormous biodiversity including over 100 mammal species. The area is particularly significant for the protection of the western lowland gorilla and the chimpanzee, whose populations have remained stable here. Researchers have documented more than 320 bird species across the various forest layers, highlighting the site's ecological relevance. The region serves as a vital carbon sink and plays a central role in the regional climate system of the Congo Basin. Despite its remoteness, protection against illegal logging and poaching remains a constant challenge for local authorities.
