Lovech is situated along the banks of the Osam River at the northern foothills of the Balkan Mountains, making it one of Bulgaria's oldest inhabited settlements. The city's most iconic landmark is the Covered Bridge, originally built in 1874 by the master builder Kolyo Ficheto, connecting the old town with the modern districts. Overlooking the city is the Hisarya Fortress, where the 1187 peace treaty was signed, effectively establishing the Second Bulgarian Empire. The historic Varosha quarter is a protected architectural reserve, featuring narrow cobblestone streets and well-preserved 19th-century houses. Lovech was a central point in the Bulgarian struggle for independence, serving as the headquarters for the revolutionary network founded by Vasil Levski. The city is often called the "City of Lilacs" due to the abundance of these flowers blooming every spring. Today, Lovech is an industrial center known for mechanical engineering and food production. Its geography provides a dramatic landscape of river bends and steep limestone cliffs that attract nature enthusiasts.
