The Temburong Valley, carved by the river of the same name, is the heart of Brunei's pristine Temburong district. This deeply incised valley is covered by one of the world's oldest and best-preserved rainforests. Much of the valley is protected within the Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei's first national park. The Temburong River is the region's lifeline, serving as the main transport artery as many areas are only accessible by traditional longboat (temuai). The valley is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, hosting rare species such as the proboscis monkey and the rhinoceros hornbill. Ecotourism is a key activity, with the canopy walkway being a major attraction, offering a bird's-eye view of the jungle canopy. The valley is a living example of successful conservation, where development is carefully managed to preserve the pristine environment.

Getting there

The valley is best reached by boat from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, followed by a short road trip. Most areas within the rainforest are only accessible via river routes using traditional longboats.

Best season

Visiting is possible year-round, but the drier months between March and October offer more stable conditions for river travel. During the peak rainy season, river water levels can rise quite rapidly.

Terrain & paths

The terrain consists of dense primary rainforest with steep slopes and often muddy paths along the riverbanks. Many visitors use elevated boardwalks or canopy walkways to safely explore the thick vegetation.

What to bring

Lightweight, breathable clothing, good rain protection, and non-slip trekking shoes are essential in this humid environment. A waterproof bag for cameras and electronics is advisable during the longboat trips.

Parking spaces are mainly found in Bangar or at the boat jetties where expeditions into the valley commence. It is recommended to organize your trip through a licensed tour operator for logistics.

Beware of slippery boardwalks and insects; effective insect repellent should always be at hand. During boat trips, follow the boatman's instructions carefully and always wear a provided life jacket.
