💡 Tips
- The new Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge connects Temburong to the mainland, making access by car much easier than the traditional water taxi.
- If taking the water taxi from Bandar Seri Begawan, expect a fast and sometimes bumpy ride through the mangroves. Sit near the back for less bouncing.
- Bangar is very small and walkable. Public transport is minimal, so plan to walk or arrange tours for places outside the town.
- Most shops and eateries close early in the evening. Plan your meals and shopping before sunset.
🍽 Food
Giant Freshwater Prawns. A Temburong specialty. Find them cooked in various styles at riverside seafood restaurants.
A traditional sticky rice dessert wrapped in nyirik leaves, commonly sold in the morning markets or local stalls.
Brunei's national dish made from sago starch, eaten with a bamboo fork (chandas) and dipped in local sauces. Available at traditional local eateries.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit early in the morning to buy local fruits, traditional kuih (cakes), and local crafts.
A few small shops offer basic souvenirs and local snacks for day-trippers.

Bangar is the administrative centre of the Temburong District, an exclave of Brunei that is physically separated from the rest of the country by Malaysia. Until the opening of the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge in 2020, the town was primarily accessible by speedboat from Bandar Seri Begawan. Situated on the banks of the Temburong River, the town serves as the gateway to the district's pristine rainforest, including the Ulu Temburong National Park. Bangar itself is a small, quiet town providing basic amenities for the local population and the few tourists who venture into Brunei's 'green lung'. Its isolation has helped preserve its natural environment, making it a hub for ecotourism and scientific research. The town's economy is based mainly on local services and agriculture.
