Kozara Memorial
The Kozara Memorial, standing majestically on the 804-meter-high Mrakovica peak in Kozara National Park, is one of the most impressive examples of Yugoslav modernism. The complex, built in 1972 according to the designs of the renowned sculptor Dušan Džamonja, commemorates the victims of the tragic Kozara Offensive of 1942, in which thousands of partisans and civilians, mostly Serbian peasants, lost their lives. The center of the complex is a monumental, 33-meter-high cylindrical tower made of raw concrete and stainless steel. Its distinctive structure, consisting of overlapping vertical elements, visually symbolizes the relentless pressure of the enemy and the unbroken will to break through of the freedom fighters. The tower is surrounded by a wide, circular wall embedded with bronze plaques bearing the names of nearly 10,000 fallen soldiers. In addition to the architectural masterpiece, the grounds host a small museum and deep green forests that today serve as a place of silent reflection and historical remembrance.
