Castle of Bouillon (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Bouillon is one of the oldest and most distinctive feudal fortresses in Belgium, dominating the scenic Semois valley from atop a steep rocky ridge. Its history is inextricably linked to Godfrey of Bouillon, who famously sold the property to the Bishopric of Liège in 1096 to finance his participation in the First Crusade, where he later rose to become the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The castle's architectural structure reflects centuries of military development: the massive walls, narrow passages, and deep dungeons testify to its medieval importance, while the subsequent 17th-century reinforcements are the work of the French military engineer Vauban. Due to its strategically vital location near the French border, it was frequently the site of border conflicts. Today, the castle captivates visitors not only with its profound historical architecture but also through regular birds of prey shows held in the courtyard, which impressively bring the medieval ambiance back to life.
