Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church Vileyka (Belarus)

Weather…

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Vileyka is an impressive example of early 20th-century Neo-Gothic architecture. It was built between 1906 and 1913 using yellow brick, based on designs by the architect August Klein. The church is striking for its vertical orientation, pointed window arches, and prominent twin-tower facade, which is visible from afar. During World War I and later conflicts, the building was damaged but remained intact in its basic structure. During the Soviet era, the church was closed and periodically used as a warehouse for agricultural products, leading to a neglect of the building's fabric. It was not until after 1990 that the Catholic community was able to reclaim the house of worship and begin an extensive restoration. Today, the church shines once again in its former glory and is a landmark of the city of Vileyka. The bright interior with its high vaults creates a prayerful atmosphere and houses several religious artworks that reflect the region's cultural richness.
