Polessky State Radioecological Reserve

The Polessky State Radioecological Reserve was established in the aftermath of the tragic Chernobyl disaster of 1986 in the evacuated exclusion zone in southeastern Belarus. Paradoxically, this heavily radioactively contaminated death zone for humans has transformed into Europe's wildest and most pristine natural paradise. Without agriculture, hunting, or forestry interventions, nature has aggressively reclaimed its territory. Across over 2,100 square kilometers, Europe's largest herds of European bison, wild Przewalski's horses (which migrated from Ukraine), and countless moose now graze among the ruins of abandoned villages. Apex predators such as wolves, lynxes, and brown bears also flourish in unnaturally high densities. The reserve is a globally unique open-air laboratory, providing researchers with invaluable data on the resilience of ecosystems and the long-term biological effects of ionizing radiation.
