Osveysky Landscape Reserve (Belarus)

Weather…

The Osveysky Landscape Reserve in the extreme north of the Vitebsk region surrounds Lake Osveyskoye, the second largest natural lake in the Republic of Belarus. This vast wetland complex is distinguished by its extremely shallow waters, extensive and inaccessible reed beds, and fascinating floating islands that shift across the water surface with the wind. Thanks to the dense riparian vegetation and minimal human disturbance, the reserve serves as a critical stepping stone for northern waterfowl during their seasonal migrations; tens of thousands of geese and ducks stop to rest here in the autumn. Furthermore, the bog and lake area is one of the few stable habitats for the extremely rare European pond turtle at its northernmost range limit and forms part of a crucial transboundary protected area network with Latvia and Russia.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Osveysky Landscape Reserve is most beautiful from May to October. In spring and summer, many waterbirds nest in the dense reed beds, and the floating islands are at their most impressive.
🌅
Best time of day
Dawn and dusk are good for birdwatching, especially when mist lies over the lake. At midday, birds are often hidden in the reeds.
📜
Etiquette
Use designated observation platforms to avoid damaging the reeds. Avoid motorboats near the floating islands, as waves destroy the vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens are highly recommended. Waterproof clothing and rubber boots are useful as the shores are often wet.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is in northwestern Belarus, about 30 km northeast of Vitebsk. Accessible by car on the P114 road; the last stretch is an unpaved track.
🦌
What to expect
The floating islands constantly shift position; watch them over a longer period from a fixed point. Binoculars help spot hidden bird nests.
