Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk (Belarus)

Weather…

Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk, originally built in the 11th century, is a majestic landmark and one of the oldest Christian structures in Belarus. It was erected as a symbol of the power of the Polotsk Principality, rivaling the eponymous churches in Kyiv and Novgorod. During the Great Northern War in 1710, the original structure was almost completely destroyed by a devastating explosion of the powder magazine stored there. In the mid-18th century, the Uniate Archbishop Florian Hrebnicki commissioned the architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz to rebuild it, giving the cathedral its present magnificent appearance in the Vilnius Baroque style. Today, the building serves as a museum and a concert hall, widely appreciated for its excellent acoustics and its famous organ.
