Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble (Belarus)

Weather…

The Palace and Park Ensemble in Gomel is one of the most magnificent examples of Classicist architecture in all of Belarus. The imposing estate was built between 1777 and 1796 on the orders of Russian Field Marshal Pyotr Rumyantsev, who received the lands from Catherine the Great as a reward for his military successes. Designed by the renowned architect Ivan Starov, the majestic palace sits high on the steep bank of the Sozh River. In the 19th century, the estate passed to Field Marshal Ivan Paskevich, who expanded the palace and laid out a splendid 34-hectare landscape park. The ensemble also includes the Peter and Paul Cathedral, an impressive burial chapel of the Paskevich family, and a historical winter garden. Today, the palace is a museum and is considered the cultural centerpiece of the city of Gomel.
